Antioxidants - Body-lovin', Beauty Lovin' Bombshells

Have you ever had that moment a health “guru” uses a word you don’t know, and it goes in one ear and out the other? Me too.

But as I started researching healthy recipes for skin care and general wellness, I kept seeing the word “antioxidant” and “free radicals.” I couldn’t ignore them any longer.  So, what are they?

What are Antioxidants and Free Radicals?

Antioxidants are substances naturally found in plants and even produced by the body that inhibit free radical damage to cells.

Free radicals are unstable cells produced from internal processes such as when the body processes inflammation, recovers after working out, experiences stress, and even breathes. They are also produced from the body reacting to external factors such as pollution, toxic cleaners and personal care products, UV exposure, refined sugars, processed foods, certain food dyes, etc. The body should normally be able to process these free radicals from the body, but with our modern-day lifestyle,  the body is overloaded with free radicals. Unfortunately, a process called “oxidation” begins to occur and cells are damaged.

Over time, this can lead to disease, higher inflammation,... and yes, even faster aging as far as wrinkles are concerned. No thanks.

OK, Where Can I Get All the Antioxidants?

Although our body is amazing in the way that it produces some antioxidants, we can greatly support it by simply eating more plants. Plant foods are the richest sources of antioxidants.

Examples of Antioxidants include:

vitamin A

vitamin C

vitamin E

beta-carotene

lycopene

lutein

selenium

manganese

zeaxanthin

Other types of antioxidants and phytonutrients (awesome natural chemicals from plants): flavonoids, flavones, catechins, polyphenols, and phytoestrogens. You need all of these. They each serve a different purpose, and you cannot interchange them.

Top antioxidant-rich foods include:

Dark Chocolate

Pecans, Walnuts

Spinach

Purple/Red Cabbage

Blueberries

Strawberries

Artichokes

Wolfberries

Everyday, salads are my favorite go-to dishes, because you can add and discover all different kinds of vegetables and fruits, legumes, nuts, and seeds. If you keep the vegetables raw, you often get more nutrients, too.

Also, did I mention I am a busy gal, who just likes to keep things simple every now and then? My Crave Worthy Salad is just the ticket. Throw some things in a bowl, put dressing on said things, eat them, feel awesome, done. That’s my style!

Learning to Thrive

For years in my early adulthood, I believed the “not enough” narrative. I felt “not enough” as a single person, as a professional, as a daughter, as a sister, and as a friend. On top of all of that, I felt ashamed of how my troubled skin and body looked as I frantically used various celebrity-endorsed products and went to numerous dermatologist appointments.

However, in 2015 things started to change. I started a fast which taught me first how to pray, but also awakened me to nourish my body with whole foods without preservatives. I treated my body with value by making sure the ingredients in the personal products I used were clean and healthy. Do you know what? My skin started to show a significant turn for the best.

That was the first step that gave me more bravery. Finally, I voiced the pain I felt at my toxic workplace, and discovered that abuse wasn’t normal. In fact, I could choose the life I wanted instead of always living by the “not enough” default.

So, in 2018, I chose freedom. I left my job. I freelanced and worked from home by sharing the toxin-free lifestyle that has equipped me with better focus, hormonal, skin, and general health for the long-term journey God has me on. On top of that, I broke loose from my poverty expectations, and jumped on a plane to my favorite country of all time (and my birthplace!), New Zealand. (While I was there, God showed how just abundant He truly is… but that is another story for another time…)

Today, I help others with my daily beauty-filled wellness tips and recipes that will help sustain their lifelong journey. I see a community that encourages women to embrace the divine timing of their lives, single or married. I see purposeful women who give to others, empowered in the truth that they are fully equipped and enough to impact their world right now.

You are worthy to step into all God has for you in the present.
